Santa Fu was the name of Germany's most notorious prison. Only lifers and hardened criminals were locked up here in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel.
Friedrich Stark, the prison's warden, is preparing for retirement. He was the first psychologist to run a German prison. He introduced a more liberal touch to the notoriously heavy-handed penal institution. He allowed the prisoners to furnish their own cells. They got a light switch and homosexuals were permitted to spend the night together. Friedrich Stark tamed the brutality of the prisoners and their guards.
